Ysgol y Parc: Disappointment with Gwynedd Council

Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has reacted with disappointment to Gwynedd Council's decision to continue with its plans to close Ysgol y Parc, despite financial problems with the plan.

The vote follows the Welsh Government's decision to reduce its funding from 70% to 50% for new school projects from 2014 onwards. Gwynedd council has decided to continue with its plan, although there is no certainty they will receive the money needed to close the school.

Ffred Ffransis, the group's education spokesperson said:

"We are saddened by the decision today of Gwynedd Councillors to confirm that that a Statutory Closure Notice should be issued in respect of Ysgol y Parc near Bala. After the notice is published, there will be a month for objections after which the Council can either withdraw the notice or pass the papers to the Minister for Education for a decision. Cymdeithas yr Iaith will give its active support to Parc and any of the other communities in Meirionydd which decide to fight against Closure Notices for their schools. We shall be announcing live on Sianel 62 [Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg's online TV channel] this Sunday evening our plans to support the community in Parc and gather widespread opposition to the Closure Notice."
